Why Aspen's Pickleball Community Is Fighting Cancer This September
On September 6, 2026, the courts at the Aspen Rec Center won't just host a pickleball tournament. They'll host a community coming together to fight cancer — in honor of one person who meant everything to the people who organized this event.
The Story Behind the Tournament
The Aspen Valley Pickleball Championships was born from grief and love. Adora Spatz Sauer was a beloved member of the Aspen community, and her passing left a mark that couldn't be ignored. Rather than let that loss sit quietly, her family and friends decided to channel it into something meaningful: a championship tournament that raises money for the causes closest to her heart.
Every team that registers, every ticket sold, and every sponsor who steps up is a direct tribute to Adora — and a real contribution to the fight against cancer.
Where the Money Goes
One hundred percent of proceeds from the tournament benefit two organizations doing critical work:
Pathfinders for Cancer provides support, resources, and hope to cancer patients and their families navigating one of the hardest journeys a person can face.
The Shining Stars Foundation funds cancer research and community programs that make a tangible difference in people's lives.
These aren't abstract causes. They're organizations that show up for real people in real moments of need.
What to Expect on September 6
The tournament features five competitive divisions, welcoming players of all skill levels — from first-timers to seasoned competitors. Whether you're a Banger or a Butt Kicker (yes, those are real division names), there's a place for your team on the court.
The day runs from morning pool play through afternoon finals, culminating in a Championship Finals and Awards Ceremony. It's a full day of competition, community, and cause.
